The Gut-Skin Connection

As a naturopath that works with skin conditions like acne, eczema and rosacea daily I am always excited with the growing research on the gut-skin connection. More and more research points to the relationship between gut health and skin health.

If a patient presents with skin rashes or hives there is always an investigation into food sensitivities/allergies and gut function… but why is this not standard protocol for acne or eczema?

Both the gut and skin are home to thousands of bacteria, these bacteria work to regulate certain processes within the skin like maintaining the skin’s barrier, reducing water loss, preventing pathogen overgrowth, reducing inflammation and so much more.

The types and amounts of these bacteria present both within the gut and on the skin, have the ability to impact the overall function of the skin and dysbiosis can result in alterations in skin homeostasis leading to acne, eczema, rosacea or psoriasis.

Facts are facts are research has shown that:

-       40% of inflammatory bowel disease suffers also experience a variety of skin conditions.

-       40% of acne suffers may have low stomach acid and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

-       Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth is 10 times more likely in acne rosacea patients

Research has also shown that strain specific probiotic supplements have improve skin barrier function, reduced trans epidermal water loss, reduced skin inflammation, improved omega-3 absorption, all essential functions for healthy and glowing skin!

If you are struggling with a skin condition investigate and work on the health of your gut and not only will you improve the health of your skin but your whole health as well!
